Military Suicide Facts 

  • 95% of military suicides are among enlisted members
  • 95% are male
  • 83% of the suicides occurred in the United States and 10% in Iraq or Afghanistan
  • 80% are Caucasian
  • 47% are under the age of 25
  • 41% had a recent outpatient behavioral health service
  • 38% had served in Afghanistan or Iraq
  • 34% had communicated their suicide intent
  • 30% had a personal relationship difficulty in the previous month
  • 20% had been prescribed antidepressants
  • 14% had exhibited prior suicidal behavior
  • 11% had been in combat
  • 6% had seen someone killed in combat
